Biography

Alexander Yau, an eminent young Australian  pianist, has developed himself as a versatile and serious musician  incorporating his many musical talents as a chamber musician, vocalist,  conductor and composer. Pianist Balazs Szokolay describes him - "His  artistic taste is good enough not to make any kind of "show" even in the  most brilliant parts of great masterworks".

A multiple prize  winner of many competitions, such as the Hastings International Piano  Concerto Competition, Australia International Chopin Competition,  Australia National Piano Award, Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition and many  more. He has appeared with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in  Rachmaninov’s 3rd Concerto, Queensland Symphony Orchestra in  Rachmaninov’s 1st Concerto, SBS Youth Orchestra in Rachmaninov’s 2nd  Concerto, and the Sydney Conservatorium Orchestra in the mighty Brahms  Concerto no.2. He has given performances in the Canberra International  Music Festival, Polish Embassy of Australia, Phoenix Central Park, City  Recital Hall, as well as Grieg’s home Troldhaugen in Norway, Villa  Mosconi Bertani in Verona, Shanghai Expo, Google Headquarters in San  Francisco, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Centre. Recently he founded his  own chamber orchestra and conducted the Mozart Concerto no. 23 from the  piano in its inaugural concert.

Alexander obtained his Masters  at the Juilliard School under prof. Matti Raekallio, Bachelors with 1st  class Honours at the Sydney Conservatorium under prof. Daniel  Herscovitch and Elizabeth Powell.
